Take a vow. Keep it. You choose a reason and a length, hold the ring, and then you don't speak until it's over. The app keeps the time, gives you somewhere to write instead, and hands you a card to show people so you don't have to explain yourself.
Open the app, choose a reason and a length if you want to change them, then press and hold the ring. It's a hold rather than a tap on purpose — you're making a promise, and it should cost you a second.
That's intended. The words fade out one at a time as the hours pass, until only the countdown is left. The app gets quieter the longer you hold it. Tap anywhere and everything comes back for a few seconds.
Press and hold "hold to end". You can do it at any time, for any reason, and the app won't make you feel bad about it — ending early is recorded plainly and nothing is taken away from you.
No. Tap Speak once. It pauses the clock for sixty seconds and starts again on its own, so there's no button to forget. You can use it as often as you need. Real practice has always allowed for necessity.
They change what the app does while you're silent. Settle and Restore leave you completely alone. Unload and Plan surface a few written questions at intervals. Recall gives you questions only when you ask for one, because memory doesn't respond to being interrupted. They also change the questions you get at the end.
The hardest part of a vow of silence is other people. Tap "Show my card" and the phone becomes something you hold up: I've taken a vow of silence. Back at 6:40pm. Not ignoring you. They can type a reply on your phone and you can write back. Nothing typed on the card is saved.
Live Activities need iOS 16.1 or later, and they can be switched off per app. Check Settings → Vow of Silence → Live Activities is on. If a vow has been running for more than about eight hours, iOS ends the Live Activity on its own — the vow itself is unaffected and the app will still be counting when you open it.
The chime arrives as a notification, because a vow usually ends while your phone is face-down or in another room. Check Settings → Vow of Silence → Notifications is allowed, and that the chime is switched on in the app's own Settings. If you declined the permission when you took your first vow, iOS will not ask again — you have to turn it on in Settings.
You shouldn't have. A vow is stored the moment it starts, and the app recalculates the time from the clock rather than counting it — so closing the app, restarting your phone or leaving it for hours are all fine. If you have lost a vow, please tell us what you did and we will fix it.
There is a 3-day free trial, and everything is unlocked during it — every reason, every length, the card, the ledger and your archive. After three days it is a subscription. There is no limited free tier underneath, so you get to try the whole thing rather than a trimmed-down version of it.
Tap Restore on the paywall, and make sure you are signed into the same Apple ID you bought with. If that doesn't work, email us with the date of purchase and we'll sort it out.
No. There is no microphone access and it never asks for any. The app keeps the time; you keep the promise. A vow you keep because you're being monitored isn't a vow.
On your phone, and nowhere else. We can't read it. Deleting the app deletes your whole archive permanently, so be sure before you do.
No — it's 12. A vow is measured in waking hours. Nobody counts the night, and a vow you keep while asleep doesn't mean anything.
No. There's nothing to follow, no voice, no course and no session to sit through. You just don't talk for a while, and the app holds you to it.
